Early in 2013, the Moore's introduced their first flock of sheep to the farm! Not knowing much about raising sheep (compared to the other livestock on the farm) or the lamb industry, the Moore's decided to invest in a mixed flock of Katahdin hair sheep and Suffolk/Hampshire crossed wool sheep. In researching which of the many breeds of sheep would provide the most desirable and highest quality cuts of meat, the Moore family felt it was a necessity to utilize two common breeds while beginning this new division of their farming operation.
In April 2014, a new breed of wool sheep were incorporated into the flock when the Moore's purchased a Texel Ram and two Texel Ewes. The Texel breed is known worldwide for it's excellent muscling and outstanding overall carcass quality. The Moore family believes the first step in providing consumers with the highest quality, farm fresh, all natural lamb, is to place heavy emphasis on the genetic capabilities of their breeding stock. With the excellent mothering characteristics of the Katahdins, superb growth rate of the Sullfolk/Hapshire crosses, and unmatched carcass value of the Texels, the Moore's have found this breed combination to be ideal for their operation. As a result of producing consistent, top quality lamb meat products, customers regularly return to Moore's Family Farm as they seek to fulfill their next mouth-watering experience!
